From Initial Idea to Final Draft
I specialize in working with both new and experienced writers who are looking for a more structured approach to develop their story. My coaching sessions are flexible and adapted to each writer’s specific needs. Each month includes two hours of feedback sessions, developmental help, and materials.
Here’s an outline of what our sessions look like:
1.Defining Goals and Session Style
Our first step is an initial meeting to discuss your writing goals, your current experience level, and how you’d like our sessions to work. This introductory chat helps me understand the kind of support you need, whether it’s foundational guidance, regular feedback on your writing, or help solving plot issues. After this, I’ll be able to create a plan that fits your goals and session style.
2. Building the Foundations (if needed)
If you need help understanding the foundations of storytelling, I can create tailored lessons that explain what they are, why they’re important, and how you can use them to enhance your writing. Each session will focus on one key aspect and include some practice activities to help you develop your skills and gain confidence.
Here are some of the things we can cover.
- Plot
- Character
- Theme
- Genre
- Dialogue
- Scenes
3. Creating Your Logline or Elevator Pitch
Next, we’ll work on taking your initial idea and creating a clear, concise logline (elevator pitch) to help guide your story. This is typically completed in a single session, and I’ll provide feedback throughout the week to help you refine it. This short summary helps to clarify your story’s premise as well as providing a core idea you can build upon and expand as you move forward with planning and writing.
4. Weekly Check-Ins and Feedback Sessions
Each week, we’ll meet for a 30-minute check-in to discuss your progress, troubleshoot any issues, and brainstorm solutions to keep the story moving forward. If you’re stuck on a plot problem or need some help pushing through writer’s block, I’ll offer feedback and ideas that complement your story goals. Our sessions will be both supportive and constructive, so that you can continue to make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.
*If you prefer, we can meet for a 1-hour check-in twice a month.
5. Accountability and Support
If you’d like accountability to help you reach your writing targets, I can work with you to establish a schedule that aligns with your progress and personal writing style. Whether you prefer weekly milestones or monthly check-ins, we’ll tailor the plan to suit your needs and adjust as necessary, ensuring you stay motivated without feeling pressured.
6. Outline Assistance
I can help you create a simple outline with the beginning, middle, and end as a clear guide, or a more detailed outline with key scenes, character arcs, and a resource bank of all your ideas to refer to as you write. Having a flexible approach means you have the structure you need without stifling your creativity.
