The Process

I specialize in working with both new and experienced writers who are looking for a more structured approach to develop their story. My coaching sessions are flexible and adapted to each writer’s specific needs. Each month includes two hours of feedback sessions, developmental help, and materials.

Here’s an outline of what our sessions look like:

figuring out your needs

Our first step is an initial meeting to discuss your writing goals, your current experience level, and how you’d like our sessions to work. This introductory chat helps me understand the kind of support you need, whether it’s foundational guidance, regular feedback on your writing, or help solving plot issues. After this, I’ll be able to create a plan that fits your goals and session style.

Each session will focus on one key aspect and include some practice activities to help you develop your skills and gain confidence. Typically, we’ll start from the very beginning so that you can grow and gain confidence. By the end of our sessions, you’ll have a template you can apply to your other books.

loglines

In our first coaching session, we’ll work on taking your initial idea and creating a one-sentence summary or ‘logline.’ This is a great way to figure out your basic premise, and it’s a good answer for when people ask you, “What’s your story about?”

blurbs

After we’ve figured out your initial idea, we’ll work on expanding it into a longer summary following the format of a back-cover blurb. This helps to identify your genre, setting, and who your protagonist is, what they want, and who or what is stopping them.

building your story

Next, we’ll work on laying the foundations of your story. Typically, we’ll explore themes, voice, conflict, structure, pacing, beats, tropes, and scenes. Whatever you feel you need support with.

feedback sessions

Each week, we’ll meet for a 30-minute check-in to discuss your progress, troubleshoot any issues, and brainstorm solutions to keep the story moving forward. If you’re stuck on a plot problem or need some help pushing through writer’s block, I’ll offer feedback and ideas that complement your story goals. Our sessions will be both supportive and constructive, so that you can continue to make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.

*If you prefer, we can meet for a 1-hour check-in twice a month.
